SPICE UP YOUR LIFE!

The Spice Girls kicked of their world tour in Vancouver last night!

Here's a few highlights . . .

Spice Girls - Vancouver 2007

I really, really, really want . . . Spice Girl tickets, a zig a zig ah . . .

BRITNEY v. CHRISTINA

It's one of those big fundamental questions of the world!

Nuclear, or Renewable Power?

IKEA, or Habitat?

In, or out the EU?

and,

Britney, or Christina?

On the latter, and clearly the most fundamental we always came down firmly on the Britney side of the divide, dismissing Christina as a waste of space (based entirely on Lady Marmalade).

But after last weeks X Factor show where "Hope" did a cover of a Christina's "Hurt" we are now dedicated Christina converts and have discovered loads of fabulous Cristina hits.

Here's her best bits . . .

Christina Aguilera - Hurt (live)

We do like a good ballad!

Don't judge a book by its Lady Marmalade, and Happy Birthday Britney . . .

WHEN THE "HOPE" IS GONE!

OMG! "Hope" were voted off the X-Factor this evening. We've lowered the flags, we're wearing black, and we're having a Brandy to steady our nerves!

But on a happier note, the girls said "we're Hope forever now!" So it's not the end.

Here's "Hope" with their amazing interpretation of "Umbrella".

Yah, Hope forever . . .

X FACTOR - HOPE!

After last weeks amazing performance of Christina Aguilera's Hurt, we're really loving "Hope" here at Popplastic!

Hope are, Phoebe Brown, 16, Charlie Mole, 23, Emily Biggs, 17, Raquelle Gracie, 20, and Leah Lauder, 20.

The girls apparently caused chaos last week by changing songs and sacking their stylists.

The girls have reportedley even been rowing among themselves because 16-year-old Phoebe is getting to sing all the lead vocals. A Popplastic source said: "Some of the band have nicknamed themselves Phoebe and the Woo Woo Girls because they just make noises in the background". They have also ignored the stylists' attempts to help them and will be dressing themselves for the live shows.

What divas they are!

Hope - Hurt

We love Phoebe and the Woo Woo Girls . . .

JUNIOR EUROVISION!

OMG! It's that time of year again - Junior Eurovision!

A truly horrific evening of shrieking child-singing, a real abomination. It's like the worst school concert ever!

That said it does provide amazing entertainment, probably one of the funniest evenings on TV. Last years show (2006) was the best (worst) ever, and the winners really stood out, the Sisters Tolmachevy were like some kind of Frankenstein's monster freak show - the Samanda Twins meets Mothercare.

And here they are, Masha and Nastya Tolmachevy from Russia with their song "Vesenniy jazz" ("Spring Jazz"). (Popplastic Warning - This song should be consumed with the utmost care)

Sisters Tolmachevy - Veseniy Jaz

That said in 2004 the UK delivered a truly outstanding performance and song (Cory Spedding - The Best Is Yet To Come) achieving results streets ahead of anything we've managed at the real thing.

Never heard of them but they contacted us here at PP Towers!

Just thought we'd share it, it's not bad, quite pleasant

Marsheaux!

We recently discovered Marsheaux during a YouTubing session whilst on the hunt for Popcorn!

and OMG, they are FAB!

Turns out Marsheaux did a cover of Popcorn, and what a cover!

Marsheaux are a Synthpop duo from Greece. Marianthi and Sophie formed the group to further their appreciation of early 1980s electronic music. The name Marsheaux is derived from the first syllable of each girl’s name. Marsheaux came to prominence with their debut single, a cover of Hot Butter’s “Popcorn”. Marsheaux released their first full Studio Album “Ebay Queen” in 2004. In December 2006 they released their follow up Album Peekaboo.

We're loving Marsheaux and here's some of our favourites . . .

LLOYDS TSB ADVERT!

Enough of the ads already!

Another ad with a great tune! This time it's the Lloyds TSB "For the Journey" commercial. It features the awesome "Eliza's Aria" by Elena Kats-Chernin. The track also featured in the movie "Legend".

Elena Kats-Chernin (1957) originally from Tashkent, received her musical training in Yaroslavl and Moscow before emigrating from the former Soviet Union to Australia in 1975.

As well as featuring on the recent Lloyds TSB commercial her music has also featured at the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Olympic Games and the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

SPICE GIRLS!

The Spice Girls have been hitting the "Headlines" for all the wrong reasons!

The word on the musical block is that their new single, Headlines (Friendship Never Ends), hasn't done well at all, only just making it into the top 10 of the midweek charts.

So far the Girls have only sold 5,278 copies, despite being available digitally last week and in the shops from Sunday (and it was featured on Popplastic - a sure fire route to success!).

We loved it!

Maybe they're a bit "Old Spice" these days . . .

JORDIN SPARKS!

This was going to be one of those " I don't know who she is, but I love this song posts"

Who is she! who is she!

Shame on you, popplastic, go to your room!

Who is she! She's the winner of American Idol 6, that's who she is!

Jordin Brianna Sparks was declared the winner of the sixth season of American Idol, at 17, Jordin is the youngest winner in American Idol history. Sparks is a committed Christian and attends Calvary Community Church in Phoenix, Arizona. On her American Idol biography, she thanks her parents and God for her win (oh well never mind, but she is a good singer).

Anyway her new single is Tattoo . . .

Natalie Imbruglia - Glorious: the Singles 1997-2007

Sometimes you buy a "best of" CD but never quite get around to listening to it (cause you know them all already). Big mistake!

She does seem to have a bit of the "Kym Marsh" about her on the CD cover!

Natalie Imbruglia's Glorious the Singles 1997-2007 is truly amazing and only serves to remind you of her awesome array of singles. We at PP Towers have been fans of Natalie since she was Beth in Neighbours! Since the release of her first single "Torn" (one of the UK’s Top-100 best-selling singles of all time) she has gone on to release numerous hit singles including "Smoke", "Big Mistake", "Shiver" (the Number 1 airplay record of 2005), "Wrong Impression", "Wishing I Was There" and "Counting Down the Days".

Here's just a couple of our favourites from Australia's most talented soap to pop star ever (bar none) . . .

GIRLS ALOUD - CALL THE SHOTS!

The G'Aloud are about to release their 17th single - "Call the Shots"

“Call the Shots” is the second single to be taken from their fourth album Tangled Up. Cheryl Cole said it's her favourite track from the new album, and said it "gives me goosebumps". It's a slower paced track, more "Whole lotto History" then "Sexy, No, No. No!" It's sure to be a hit - We love it!

Call the Shots will be released on the 26th of November.

POPCORN!

Sometimes you hear a tune and just think it's a piece of incidental music but it turns out to be a proper track! Bonus!

This is the story of Popcorn!

A 1999 Superdrug commercial featured a really upbeat popy tune which went down well at PP Towers and YES it turned out to be a proper track - POPCORN! (Thank you AndyPop)

"Popcorn" is a famous early synthpop instrumental. Composed by Gershon Kingsley in 1969 for his album Music to Moog By. He recorded it again in 1971 (and why not) for his new band the First Moog Quartet (was there a second). The most famous early version was recorded in 1972 by "Hot Butter" which included Stan Free, one of the original Mog Quartet members and was the first electronic based track to chart in the USA. Since then there have been over 500 cover versions of Popcorn and the track also featured as the background music in the 1982 arcade game Pengo. What a font of knowledge we are here at PP Towers!

It even has a website dedicated to - Popcorn

Here's a couple of recent cover versions. Perhaps the best version ever has to be Marsheaux's, it's just . . . popcorn!

AS THE WORLD TURNS!

Why oh why do we not get As The World Turns (ATWT) on TV in the UK!

It's like Sunset Beach only better, is that possible! ATWT is a CBS daytime drama with some awesome story lines. We're all hooked on the Nuke storyline here at Popplastic Towers!

Popplastic are petitioning to have ATWT's brought to our screens in the UK!

Click on the link and sign the petition. We've had to make do without ATWT's for too long!

Sing here!

It might not have a lot to do with ATWT's but Chris Doran's, "If my world stopped turning" (Eurovision 2006) has a similar title and we had to have a song in there somewhere!

Check out ATWT's online!
